That's a rather large bump! Heavily-pregnant Carla Bruni catches the eyes of young girl on a public walkabout

What a large bump: Carla Bruni caught the attention of a young brunette girl who seemed transfixed by her growing belly

For months Carla Bruni has kept quiet about her pregnancy and at first managed to avoid anyone even getting a glimpse of her growing belly.

But as her due date looms ever closer the French First Lady has not been able to hide her burgeoning bump and caught the attention of a curious little girl when she went on a walkabout with her husband Nicolas Sarkozy.

The former supermodel and musician, dressed in a black dress and coat, towered over the youngster who seemed transfixed by the 43-year-old mother.

Miss Bruni was greeted by a large crowd when she paid a visit to the gardens of the Elysee Palace in Paris during France's Day of Patrimony - the day all its state buildings are opened to the public.

The wife of the French president only recently opened up about her pregnancy and said she would make sure the new arrival was not subject to scrutiny.

The child, which will be Mr Sarkozy's fourth, will be the first born to a serving president during the entire history of the Fifth Republic, and is bound to create a media storm.

But Miss Bruni, who is due in October, has said she is determined not allow any photographs of the newborn to be published, especially after her 11-year-old son Aurelien was once caught on camera.

When Miss Bruni first started dating Mr Sarkozy, 56, in 2007 her son was pictured by photographers with the couple during a holiday to Jordan.

She has since said she deeply regrets the 'careless' mistake and said it would never happen again.

'My eldest son was exposed once and not in a public situation but in a private situation and it was a great error.

'I should never have taken my son to visit this magnificent site. I should have foreseen that there would be photographers there. I was careless.'

Miss Bruni, who has previously dated English rock-stars Mick Jagger and Eric Clapton, has always welcomed publicity but feels it would be inappropriate to expose her children in the same way.

'You don't have a child to play to the gallery and my position as the wife of the head of state has made me even more defensive,' said Miss Bruni during a recent French television interview.

'I understand the media interest and I don’t see any inconvenience in it for me or my husband, but when it concerns the children it is impossible.'
