Wanted to be a war journalist: Minisha Lamba

Bollywood actress Minisha Lambha on Thursday (28 July, 2011) visited Kolkata to promote the new entertainment channel from UTV group called UTV STARS. IBNS correspondent Arnab Chakraborty caught up with her after the event for an informal chat.

How do you feel about UTV STARS?


I think it's going to be great. I think we are going to come a lot closer to the people. Our lives are not really that extraordinary so half the things we tell to the press a made up. I think people are going to know about our really boring lives. I believe they will get to know us better.


Do you think there will be privacy issues?


Well our media still has a lot of respect for privacy and there is a great ethic code still present. Compared to the west we have a lot more privacy. So I don't think there'll be any such problem.


Recently you are part of Bheja Fry 2 and the film didn't do so well in the box office. Why do you think that it was so?


Why do you say that? The film made money and the producer is ‘malamal’ (very rich) right now. He's yet to take me out to dinner as a treat.


Still what was the problem with the movie? It didn't attract a cult following like Bheja Fry.


I guess we are used to a lot of cult movies right now and when Bheja Fry came out it was a comedy and everybody was amazed by how it was shot in one room. Today for a film to become a cult film you need for it to be more than a comedy. It has to be a film that addresses society. It has to be a film that dealt about very serious things but the way that its shot has to be a cult film. It is very difficult for comedies to become cult films.


Tell us about your upcoming films.


There is a film coming called ‘Hum Tum Shabana’. It's also comedy directed by Mr. Sagar Ballary. There is another film called ‘Joker’ and then there is ‘Zilla Ghaziabad’. ‘Hum Tum Shabana’ will release in September and the other two will release next year.


Tell us about your experience at Cannes film Festival. How was it?


It was beautiful and I think in the West they have really got the red carpet thing packed and they know how to do it beautifully out there. So to experience the original place of Cannes, which is the largest festival in the world, was great. But having said that I would like to add that we in India also do the red carpet premieres very well. The only difference is that our journalists don't wear tuxedos behind the line which is the uniform there.


Personally what genre of films you like?


I love dramas and thrillers.


And what about directors? Who are your favourite directors?


Michael Bay is one of my favourite directors. Tony Scott is another director I absolutely love and Steven Soderbergh too.


Which are the directors in India with whom you would like to work?


I would love to work with a lot of newcomers. I will like to work with Dibakar Banerjee and Rajkumar (Gupta).


Is it true that you really wanted to be a journalist?


Ya that is very true. In fact I wanted to be a war journalist. I wanted to go off to places like Bosnia and Chechnya and Israel. Acting is something that was not planned. It really happened like an accident. But my parents are more than happy that film happened so I wouldn't go to some corner and be bombed out.


So what do you feel about coming to Kolkata?


I love Kolkata. I love coming back here. I love the place, the people, the food and also the architecture. I love the old world feel of the city. I also love the Bengali language as it's very sweet.


So any plans of being in a Bengali film?


First it would take me five years to learn the language. But yes maybe someday. Though I have watched Bengali films of Rituparno Ghosh.

Minissha Lamba to star in Zilla Ghaziabad

Minissha Lamba, who was recently seen in Bheja Fry 2, has been signed for the multi-starrer Zilla Ghaziabad. The film, directed by newcomer Anand Kumar, stars Sanjay Dutt, Vivek Oberoi and Arshad Warsi in lead roles.

Minissha is paired opposite Arshad in the film which talks about politics, crime and mafia in the state of Uttar Pradesh. The actress even tweeted, "Zilla Ghaziabad!! My new project, starring Sanju baba, Arshad n Vivek Oberoi. Can't wait for it to begin."

Minissha Lamba detained at Mumbai airport with undeclared jewellery

Bollywood actress Minissha Lamba was held at the international airport in Mumbai on Wednesday, barely moments after returning from the 64th Cannes Film Festival. The actress was reportedly carrying undeclared jewellery worth half a crore.

After landing from an Emirates flight, Minissha was detained by the custom authorities, who had claimed that the actress was carrying jewellery worth Rs. 50 Lakhs. The customs officials had detained the actress for several hours, as she was reportedly carrying jewellery worth more than that what is usually permitted without declaration. The actress alleges it was provided to her by a jewellery brand to wear at Cannes.

Minissha was questioned in the afternoon and was even reportedly detained by the authorities. The airline custom officials have said that a case will be registered after recording a statement from the actress.

The ‘Bachna ae Haseeno’ actress was stopped by the officials at the green channel and was questioned by Sameer Wankhede, who is the deputy commissioner. Wankhede had said that they had stopped her as she was carrying jewellery above the permissible limit or must have not declared the jewellery before she flew. Wankhede added that in cases where the jewellery was worth 5 lakhs, a bail would be granted on the grounds of personal jewellery, but the actress had to be detained as it was worth 50 lakhs. Moreover, while the actress was returning to Mumbai, she had lost one of her baggage trolleys at the Nice airport and had even tweeted about the loss.

Bheja Fry 2 to be released overseas on 17th June

Actor Vinay Pathak is back with the sequel of the movie ‘Bheja Fry’. Now Shemaroo Entertainment is all set to release the movie overseas. The company has the commercial as well as non commercial rights of the movie’s distribution, exhibition and exploitation.

The company is all set to release ‘Bheja Fry 2’ overseas on 17th June 2011. However, the movie will be released in countries excluding Bhutan, India and Sikkim. The movie is produced by Mukul Deora and is directed by Sagar Ballary.

Shemaroo Entertainment director, Hiren Gada has said that the earlier movie was very well accepted by the audience worldwide. Gada also said that the people are actually waiting to see what the sequel has in store for the audience.

The director also added that they are confident that the movie will do even better than the previous movie. Gada announced that they are also planning to introduce the movie to the fresh platforms like mobile, IPTV and the internet. The cast of the movie includes Minissha Lamba, Kay Kay Menon, Suresh Menon, Rahul Vohra, Aditi Govitrikar, Rahul Singh, Amole Gupte and Virendra Saxena. In India the movie is distributed by Watchtower International. ‘Bheja Fry 2’ is all set to entertain the audience with double excitement.

Bollywood Actress On International Women's Day 2011

Some feel International Women’s Day is about creating awareness towards certain issues, some feel it is to celebrate womanhood and celebrities like actress Raveena and author Shobha De welcome the special occasion.Here are the views of some female celebrities on International Women’s Day that falls on March 8:

Raveena Tandon: Honestly, I think Women’s Day is celebrated on the note of trying to be more aware so that media focuses more on women’s problem, women issues, violence against women and all these things. It’s not that Women’s Day is for sudden empowerment of women. It does not happen. I think it works as a purpose to bring awareness towards certain issues. Yes, it’s an honour for women that they have a day to celebrate the achievements of women who have gone against all odds and achieved something in life.

Shobhaa De: It is a symbolic day that has assumed certain significance over the years. I try and make time to attend special functions that focus on women’s issues in a serious way. It reminds us of our own special place in society, and it is definitely a day to celebrate, especially in a country like ours, which has a poor track record of how it treats its women.

Prachi Desai: We are really fortunate to be born in families so liberal, so educated, broadminded, independent that it helps us grow. But there are many unfortunate women too. This day is also about reaching out to all those women. This particular day brings that to notice.

Minissha Lamba: I am proud to be a woman of this century. Its a blessing for me as we are mentally and emotionally stronger than men. Today, women are reaching such great heights not only on the domestic front but also professionally. I gracefully celebrate womanhood. Today women are able to take up challenges with better elan and confidence than men.

Aarti Chabbaria: I am very happy to be a woman. It’s us who have the strength to express our views nonchalantly. But my heart goes out to the women of our nation staying in the interiors. Every day one hears stories of rape, dowry harassment cases and female infanticide. These women need help and be made to be aware of their rights in the society. It is in these small towns that one needs to bring about a drastic change. The day we succeed in doing it, we know for sure that Indian women have finally come of age.
