Delhi Public School, Mathura Road is a private co-educational day and boarding school in New Delhi, India. It is a member of the Indian Public School Conference. The school was founded in 1949 and was the first Delhi Public School.
The school began as Church High School in the President's Estate in 1941. It was renamed to Naveen Bharat School in 1947, and finally moved to its present location on Mathura Road and was renamed as Delhi Public School in 1949.
The foundation stone of the school building was laid in 1956 by Dr.S. Radhakrishnan, the then Vice-President of India, and the buildings were substantially complete by 1965 three years after Principal Din Dayal took over.
Mathura Road quickly established itself as one of the leading public schools in New Delhi, both academically and in sports, with the student body drawn from the quickly growing populations of Government officials' children and children of the then newly rising Punjabi refugee business community establishing itself in South Delhi.
By 1965, the school had moved into a three-storey building and by 1970 it had a student body of almost 3,000 students.
The school follows the Central Board of Secondary Education system and has continuous tests and assignments.
In 2007 it was rated as the third 'most respected secondary school' in India in a survey conducted by the Indian Market Research Bureau (IMRB) for the Deccan Herald newspaper.
The Rev. (Dr.) J. D. Tytler was the first principal of the school. He was followed by Dr. K. C. Khanna, and then, in 1962, by Mr. Din Dayal. The current principal is Mr. M. I. Hussain.
Campus
The campus is spread over 15 acres surrounded by ancient Islamic-style tombs, and is situated in the heart of the capital, near the Purana Quila and the Zoological Gardens. The school buildings today comprise four computer centres, a work-experience block; science, maths, psychology, biology, chemistry and physics laboratories; three libraries, three swimming pools, squash courts, basketball courts, cricket grounds, football fields, facilities for indoor, a cafeteria, a hostel and a gym.
The hostel buildings are divided into five wings, the Fifth Wing being the girls' hostel. First Wing is where standard 12th students stay. Second Wing houses standard 11th students, mostly science students who joined the school in the current year. The Third and Fourth Wings have a mixed population. However, there are more primary level students in the Fourth Wing. The Fourth Wing was originally the school clinic. In 1996, DPS Society, the parent organization, decided to start a girls' hostel in DPS, Mathura Road. For this, a building was needed. The management then converted the clinic into a girls' hostel. The clinic was moved to a temporary three-room facility on the ground floor of First Wing.
