News : Sonam Kapoor misses an opportunity

Bollywood Gossips, Sonam kapoor
Sonam Kapoor seems like going through a really bad phase of her health. Off late there have been reports of the pretty actress falling ill quite often and her ill-health recently was also the reason of her missing a lucrative opportunity. Recently New Zealand’s Prime Minister John Key visited the sets of her upcoming film ‘Players’ but Sonam could not be present on the sets citing her health issues.

Abbas-Mustan’s ‘Players’ has been extensively shot in New Zealand and the makers have formed a special bond with the PM. The cast including Abhishek Bachchan, Bipasha Basu et al had a chance to share pleasantries with the PM and interact with him but unfortunately Sonam missed the opportunity.

But health certainly comes first; opportunities like these would come and go, especially when Sonam has just got started with her career.

Sonam Kapoor Labeled As The Hot Pin Up Gal

Sonam Kapoor

Sonam Kapoor is indeed the masakali girl who has traversed the path to success with aplomb. Despite the fact that her debut flick Saawariya failed to create a roar at the box office the gal has managed to sustain herself in the industry with quite a lot of positive attitude.

Sonam had been almost labeled as the gal with the traditional touch in the industry, what with her debut film having her portray the typical Hindi film heroine with the traditional attire and an ethnic background and her second movie Delhi 6, having her in a typical salwar kameez clad role.

However, this movie was also quite a transition for her as she also had a hep look with high street fashion garments sported by her in the second half.

Sonam Kapoor broke the mould to emerge as a true blue modern chic with the KJO flick I Hate Love Storys, where she was seen in the most modern attire with designer labels et al.

The actual transition of image for Sonam was of course with the movie Aisha, where she made a splash with her on screen persona and stylish attitude with the most happening wardrobe and a great positive attitude which literally made her one of the most happening fashionistas of B town.

These days Sonam has been seen in the most stylish of ensembles, be it at film premieres, events, or magazine covers or high end chat shows on the telly. Amazingly, Sonam has also been labeled as the hot pin up gal due to her appearance on magazine covers almost every month!

Well, we do hope to see a lot of the star in the coming months. Reportedly, her role in Pankaj Kapoor’s Mausam, co-starring Shahid Kapoor will see her in a series of different attires as her role in the movie will see her ageing from a young girl to an old woman. So get ready to see the fashionista at her best in the coming year.

Movie Review: Sonam Kapoor's Aisha

Director: Rajshree Ojha

Cast: Sonam Kapoor, Abhay Deol, Amrita Puri, Ira Dubey

Rating: 3 stars

In a late line from the film, Aisha Kapoor’s father tells her, “ Hum Kapoor hai. Hum zyada sochte nahi. We believe in action ”. This pretty much qualifies as an (unintentional) self-mocking line on producer Anil Kapoor and Rhea Kapoor and actress Sonam Kapoor. Perhaps the Kapoors put this picture into production without much pondering. What starts as a cheerful chick flick sadly ends up being a lame love story.

Based on Jane Austen’s novel Emma , the problem with the cinematic adaptation, unlike the book, is that within the first twenty minutes of the film you can predict the last twenty minutes. Which means once the characters are introduced and established, you can easily figure out which girl is gonna fall for which boy by the end, irrespective of all the cross-connections that the narrative attempts to mislead you.

Aisha (Sonam Kapoor) is a sassy Delhi dame who believes she is the best matchmaker in town. With friend Pinky (Ira Dubey), she plans to hook up her new bucolic buddy Shefali (Amrita Puri) with common friend Randhir (Cyrus Sahukar). When things don’t work out, she tries to set Shefali up with another friend Dhruv (Arunoday Singh) until Shefali falls for Arjun Burman (Abhay Deol). So far so good but like in all average love stories Arjun happens to be Aisha’s childhood friend! And abruptly Aisha’s heart starts beating for Arjun.

Seeking the sparkling spirit from chick flicks like Sex and the City, Confessions of a Shopaholic , 27 Dresses , et al director Rajashree Ojha sets the tone of the film correct. With her feminine perspective, the lady director adds a youthful zing to the female bonding, packaging the film with the requisite glitz and glamour. Also what’s amusing is the interesting characterization of Aisha modeled on Austen’s Emma Woodhouse. Aisha deviously dominates her friends, decides for them and (as her friend Arjun mentions) turns them into her Xerox copies. The silliness of her ideas and actions amuse and irritate.

But beyond its slick skin, the movie is weakened by Devika Bhagat’s standard screenplay. Pre-interval the film wanders aimlessly amidst polo matches and river-rafting camps and continues casually post-interval to reach a conventional ending. One can’t overlook the loose ends in the story for its lighthearted storytelling. While the first half is shallow on story, the second half is short on originality. What adds to the clichés is Aisha’s perplexity to profess love out of fear of rejection (a conflict too common) followed by a public declaration of her feelings in the climax (a scene too common).

The romantic chemistry between Sonam Kapoor and Abhay Deol seems nonexistent. You acknowledge them as good friends as the film starts but never realize when cupid has struck in the climax. The jealousy pangs that arouse adoration in Aisha’s mind are conspicuously absent. As a result, you don’t relate to her turmoil.

The pace drops drastically in the second half and even Sreekar Prasad’s editing doesn’t save the narrative from dragging. Shefali’s sudden realization towards the climax that she was taken for a ride all-through by Aisha seems a bit too rushed. The supposed romance between Shefali and Arjun is never elucidated. The film concludes with a peppy Punjabi track ( Gall Mithi Mithi Bol ) amidst wedding celebrations much in the vein of the Kawa Kawa number from the finale of Monsoon Wedding . Just that the end fails to have the same gratifying effect like the Mira Nair film.

On the upside, the film is blessed with a brilliant musical score by Amit Trivedi (of Dev.D fame). Also Trivedi’s treatment to the background score is refreshingly different and aptly complements the flavour of the film. The styling by Kunal Rawal and Pernia Qureshi is uber-cool and trendy. Cinematographer Diego Rodriguez imparts colourful richness to the frames. Dialogues by Manu Rishi and Ritu Bhatia are funny at instances but the climactic romantic discourse sounds verbose.

Director Rajashree Ojha succeeds in extracting decent performances from the entire cast. Sonam Kapoor fits the title role to T. Aisha is the most defined role she has essayed so far and Sonam adds spark and soul to it. Even when she irritates with her antics, she is in sync with her character. Abhay Deol as the suave corporate guy adds poise to, both, his character and performance, bringing sanity whenever Aisha goes insane. Amrita Puri as the small-town wannabe is hilarious with her middle-class mannerisms and elite aspirations. At times she overdoes it but still manages to be the scene-stealer. Ira Dubey as Aisha’s best pal is impressive. Cyrus Sahukar plays a loser in love and is funny. Lisa Haydon is plain pinup material. Arunoday Singh tries hard to play the Casanova.

‘A beautiful body but a shallow soul’ is what qualifies for, both, Aisha – the character as well as Aisha – the film.

Sonam Kapoor To Work In A Bengali Film

Bollywood actress Sonam Kapoor, who was in the city Saturday to promote her upcoming moving 'Aisha', said Bimal Roy is her most favourite director and expressed her willingness to work in a Bengali film if she gets a good script.

"I would love to work in a Bengali movie if I am provided with a good script. Most of my favourite directors are Bengali. One of my most favourite directors is Bimal Roy," she said.

Roy, known as the "Silent Master of Indian Cinema", was known for films like 'Do Bigha Zameen', 'Devdas', 'Sujata', 'Madhumati' that had the power to inspire and move audiences.

The movies of Aparna Sen and Satyajit Ray also inspire her, she said.

Sonam was accompanied by most of her 'Aisha' co-stars and sister Rhea, who is also the producer of the film.

Sonam Kapoor Will Make A Chic Splash

Sonam Kapoor and Abhay Deol, the leading duo of 'Aisha' make a winsome pair in the Rhea Kapoor venture, as the promos seem to suggest. Come August 6, 2010, Sonny Girl will make a chic splash with the adaptation of the classic Jane Austen novel 'Emma'.

While filming in Rishikesh for 'Aisha', a few 'extras' were needed for a volleyball sequence in the chick flick. Eventually, they couldn't find any that would fit the bill aptly.

Stuck with this unfavourable fix...director Rajshree Ojha decided to pull in the two costume designers and stylists Pernia Qureshi and Kunal Rawal of 'Aisha'… right into the camera frames! And place them behind the main cast in the volleyball game. Not only did they seem like they were part of the gang, they shot well too.

Kunal Rawal, who enacts Gulshan in 'Aisha' has been ribbed ever since over his mini debut in the flick. Though, there's little disputing that both Qureshi and Rawal truly…had a ball! Hah, quite literally.

Sonam Kapoor In Sophia Loren's Productions

She’s riding high on the success of ’I Hate Luv Storys’, her first hit in Bollywood, and now Sonam Kapoor has more reasons to celebrate.

It seems that she’s been offered roles in two Hollywood productions, one of them with Ben Stiller. Apparently, dad Anil Kapoor (who’s made a name for himself in Hollywood after ’Slumdog Millionaire’) met Stiller to discuss a joint production, and that’s when Sonam’s name came up.

She is also supposed to have been offered a role in a movie by Eduardo Ponti (the son of legendary actress Sophia Loren) which will be shot in India.

Sonam is said to be thinking about these roles, as she has a busy schedule ahead. She’s shooting for ’Mausam’ with Shahid Kapoor and ’Thank You’ with Akshay Kumar this year.

Will Sonam head for Hollywood and make an impression like her dad did?

Sonam Kapoor Reluctant To Get Into The Mature Mould

After playing the giddyheaded starry-eyed young lover-girl in all her films so far including the about-to-be-released I Hate Luv Storys, Sonam Kapoor in Mausam is all set to play a girl who evolves into a woman in the course of the film.

Her clothes which are always a source of powerful on-screen personality-transference for her have been worked on at great lengths by designer Anamika Khanna.

And the result, says a member of the crew, is no less than devastating.

Apparently Sonam was initially reluctant to get into the mature mould.

“She had reservations about being bracketed in the maturer mould so early in her career. In all her films so far from Saawariya to Thank You Sonam has played girls her own age and dressed accordingly, in what she's comfortable with. The Western clothes that 'd transform her into a chic Delhi socialite in Aisha are as much a part of her personality as the salwar-kameez that she wore in Delhi 6.”

Apparently designer Anamika Khanna who has worked earlier with Sonam in Delhi 6 has been poring over the designs with Sonam trying to figure out what clothes she's most comfortable in.

Shahid who needed to make a sartorial changeover to play the mature mellow lover in the later part of the film, has also been heard joking about how Mausam has turned him and Sonam into overnight adult stars.

Says the Mausam producer Sheetal Talwar, “Shahid has sported the mature mellow look in Jab We Met. But for Sonam the transformation from girl to woman in Mausam is a challenge. Before she left for Scotland Sonam wanted to be completely comfortable in her new avatar.”

Actress Sonam Kapoor Writing A Romantic Novel

Sonam Kapoor's getting it write. SK is known to gung ho about mushy romantic novels. Reportedly, Sonny Girl will now take her proclivity to a new high… by turning author. Word has it, that SK has already cottoned onto a subject that she's keen to explore.

"I love fairy tale romances with joyful endings," admits Sonny in a media chat. "And my book is going to be no different. For years, I've been contemplating writing a romantic novel, because the genre has always fascinated me."

Confessing to having enjoyed the "beautiful simplicity of complex classics", Sonny admits that the novels of Jane Austen such as 'Sense And Sensibiity,' 'Pride And Prejudice', 'Emma' and 'Mansfield Park' were instrumental in stirring the latent writer in her.

The actress, however, is swift to clarify that her propensity for love tales in 'I Hate Luv Storys' has little to do with her latest obsession. States Sonny, "I had always wanted to write, much, much before I signed on for 'IHLS'. But now the time has come."

However, pulpy novel heroines who languish in the throes of unreciprocated romance don't bag Sonny's vote, and the actress asserts that, "I don't like unrequited love. As far as I'm concerned, love should always be fulfilled and cherished."

Guess, a certain Punit Malhotra agrees heartily. ;)))))))))))
